Media is a valuable weapon in the marketplace of ideas. The challenge of progressive organizations is to convince the public and the "mainstream" media that failing schools, racial profiling and complex voting requirements reflect bad public policies that affect all races and classes. Concurrently, we have to expose the devastating consequences - denied opportunities, pathetically funded human services, feelings of indignity and despair- these policies are having on society, especially poor and minority communities.
Distorted representations of immigrants, communities of color and indigenous people reinforce structural racism in this country. Moreover, other strains of discrimination are often interwoven and difficult to separate from race in media representation.
We must recapture the public's attention to create a thoughtful dialogue of racial justice issues in a persuasive and compelling way. Root & Branch needs your help in developing a viable, nimble and modern communications apparatus to break into the marketplace of ideas on race and ethnicity.
